so this might be a strange/weird roundabout way of doing backgrounds, but it's an idea i had floating around that i thought would be cool to suggest! that idea is... using Trenchbroom (Quake map-making software) to make low-poly 3d backgrounds for art, or for making a guide for background perspective kinda similar to how people do so with Minecraft!
this idea came when i was messing with the software to make maps for a game. since you can use outdated map-making software to make maps for new games, why not use it for other purposes? you can apply custom textures, import the maps into certain softwares with the right plugins (and after doing that, add post-processing and other texturing options like normal maps and glossiness), etc. as a result i think there's a lot of usefulness that can come from using Trenchbroom, both for 2d and 3d forms of art ^^
here's some Trenchbroom-related tutorials if anyone wants to try any of that with their art!:
The tutorial for using the maps in Godot, which if you use could let you add normal maps, glossiness, metallicness, etc. if you're using the maps as art backgrounds
A channel with plenty of Trenchbroom tutorials. They teach ya how to make curved tunnels, chains, etc. If you wanna go more indepth with the software to make your backgrounds really snazzy, it's a good place to start!
I think this could especially be helpful for people trying to make custom liminal space backgrounds for their art, as the old feeling to it really can bring that vibe.

i've used google sketchup in the past to get an idea of space. i'll check to see if i can find a tutorial, but it's a good reference. i know @neonUFO (tiredsleepy) is using sims?
in any case it's good to make something so that you're able to properly place things. i'mma check later to see if i can find the other tutorials on this, and edit this reply!

i said i would use sims, but i haven't gotten around to it yet when i turned the game on last time one look at the building mode made me depressed and exhausted as i remembered how bad i was at it LMAO (and how hot my computer gets when it plays sims )
